The Future is Now

What is the future of business in the U.S. and what do we do next now that restrictions are being lifted ? This is the question facing offices, retailers, restaurants, hotels, convention centers, and just about everyone whose business or organization has been closed or whose operations have been very limited since the beginning of the pandemic.

Members of the event and hospitality industries are looking at ways to make attendees, exhibitors, presenters, and guests feel safe and comfortable in this new time of caution.

We are all by now familiar with the individual behaviors which effect health and safety. Wearing a face mask, hand washing, using a hand sanitizer, and of course social distancing are all part of the new social rules. The event and hospitality venues where even small groups will gather can encourage good individual behavior by ensuring person protection supplies are readily available to event attendees and hotel guests and by providing the proper signage and arrangements for social distancing.  Controlling the venue environment is another important part of preparing for the presence of groups of people spending time together in the close spaces. Some businesses such as the Hilton Hotels have already developed protocols and programs to deal with this issue. Hilton has collaborated with medical professionals and manufacturers of cleaning and sanitation products to develop processes and training programs which will help their guests have a cleaner and safer stay from check-in to check-out.

UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry has launched an accreditation program on cleaning, disinfection and infectious disease prevention for conference and convention venues. Several U.S. convention centers such as the Las Vegas Convention Center and Chicago’s McCormick Place have signed up for the GBAC Star accreditation program. The UFI has also issued a global manifesto aimed at the safe and controlled reopening of exhibitions and B2B trade events around the world. This document could be the future standard for policymakers and authorities around the world.

In this new environment, events and hotel stays will look different and everyone will have to work together to make it all work. Cleaning procedures will be more rigorous. chairs and tables will be placed further apart, fewer people will be allowed in a room or lecture hall at one time, voices will be muffled by masks, and much more.
